Abstract
Using a simple two-color selection based on g-, z-, and K-band photometry, we pick out 1609 star-forming galaxies (sgzKs) and 422 passively evolving galaxies (pgzKs) at z\sim2fromaK−band−selectedsample(K_{\rm AB} < 22.0)inanareaof\sim 0.44deg^{2}oftheAll−wavelengthExtendedGrothStripInternationalSurvey.ThenumbercountsofpgzKs inoursampleturnoveratK_{\rm AB} \sim 21.0,andboththenumberoffaintandbrightobjects(includingsgzKs andpgzKs)exceedthepredictionsofarecentsemi−analyticmodelofgalaxyformation,amoresuccessfulmodelisneedtoexplainthisdiversity.Wealsofindthatthestarformationrate(SFR)andspecificSFR(sSFR)ofsgzKs increaseswithredshiftatallmasses,implyingthatstar−forminggalaxiesweremuchmoreactiveonaverageinthepast.Moreover,thesSFRofmassivegalaxiesisloweratallredshifts,suggestingthatstarformationcontributesmoretothemassgrowthoflow−massgalaxiesthantohigh−massgalaxies.FromHubbleSpaceTelescopeWideFieldCamera3near−infraredimagingdata,wefindthatmorphologiesofz\sim2galaxiesnotonlyhavediffusestructureswithlowerGandhigherM_{20}values,butalsohavesingle−objectmorphologies(higherGandlowerM_{20}),implyingthattherearemorphologicalvarietyanddifferentformationprocessforthesegalaxiesatz\sim2.Finally,wealsostudythefractionofactivegalacticnuclei(AGNs)inthegzKs,82of828gzKs withfourIRACbandscanbeclassifiedasAGNs(\sim10L_{\rm 0.5-10\ keV}>10^{41}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$.
