Collisionless Stellar Hydrodynamics as an Efficient Alternative to N-body Methods
Nigel L. Mitchell, Eduard I. Vorobyov, Gerhard Hensler
For simulations that deal only with dark matter or stellar systems, the conventional N-body technique is fast, memory efficient, and relatively simple to implement. However when in…
On the Origin of Cores in Simulated Galaxy Clusters
N. L. Mitchell, I. G. McCarthy, R. G. Bower +2
(Abridged) The thermal state of the intracluster medium results from a competition between gas cooling and heating. The heating comes from two distinct sources: gravitational heati…
A test suite for quantitative comparison of hydrodynamics codes in astrophysics
Elizabeth J. Tasker, Riccardo Brunino, Nigel L. Mitchell +5
We test four commonly used astrophysical simulation codes; Enzo, Flash, Gadget and Hydra, using a suite of numerical problems with analytic initial and final states. Situations sim…
Ram pressure stripping the hot gaseous halos of galaxies in groups and clusters
Ian G. McCarthy, Carlos S. Frenk, Andreea S. Font +5
We use a large suite of carefully controlled full hydrodynamic simulations to study the ram pressure stripping of the hot gaseous halos of galaxies as they fall into massive groups…
