Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of the unstable nucleus $^{186}$ Re is studied by investigating the inverse photodisintegration reaction $^{187}$ Re( $γ$ ,n). The special interest of the {\it s}-process branching point $^{186}$ Re is related to the question of possible {\it s}-process contributions to the abundance of the {\it r}-process chronometer nucleus ^{187} $R e . W e u se t h e p h o t o a c t i v a t i o n t ec hni q u e t o m e a s u r e p h o t o d i s in t e g r a t i o n r a t es . O u r e x p er im e n t a l r es u l t s a r e in g oo d a g r ee m e n tw i t h tw o d i f f er e n t s t a t i s t i c a l m o d e l c a l c u l a t i o n s . A l t h o ug h t h ecr osssec t i o n s p r e d i c t e d b y b o t hm o d e l s f or t h e in v er ser e a c t i o n$ ^{186} $R e (n,$ γ $) i s t oo l o w t or e m o v e t h eo v er p r o d u c t i o n o f$ ^{186}$Os; the two predicted neutron-capture cross sections differ by a factor of 2.4; this calls for future theoretical study.
