Revisiting Empirical Solar Energetic Particle Scaling Relations I. Solar flares
Athanasios Papaioannou, Konstantin Herbst, Tobias Ramm +3
Aims The possible influence of solar superflares on the near-Earth space radiation environment are assessed through the investigation of scaling laws between the peak proton flux a…
Crewed Missions to Mars: Modeling the Impact of Astrophysical Charged Particles on Astronauts and Their Health
Dimitra Atri, Caitlin MacArthur, Sriram Devata +8
The impact of exposure to astrophysical ionizing radiation on astronaut health is one of the main concerns in planning crewed missions to Mars. Astronauts will be exposed to energe…
The First Ground Level Enhancement of Solar Cycle 25 on 28 October 2021
A. Papaioannou, A. Kouloumvakos, A. Mishev +8
Aims. The first relativistic solar proton event of solar cycle 25 (SC25) was detected on 28 October 2021 by neutron monitors (NMs) on the ground and particle detectors onboard spac…
Atmospheric processes affecting methane on Mars
John Lee Grenfell, Fabian Wunderlich, Miriam Sinnhuber +6
It is currently uncertain as to whether methane exists on Mars. Data from the Curiosity Rover suggests a background methane concentration of a few tenths parts per billion whereas…
