Future Prospects: Deep Imaging of Galaxy Outskirts using Telescopes Large and Small
Roberto Abraham, Pieter van Dokkum, Charlie Conroy +5
The Universe is almost totally unexplored at low surface brightness levels. In spite of great progress in the construction of large telescopes and improvements in the sensitivity o…
The Dragonfly Nearby Galaxies Survey. II. Ultra diffuse galaxies near the elliptical galaxy NGC 5485
Allison Merritt, Pieter van Dokkum, Shany Danieli +4
We present the unexpected discovery of four ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in a group environment. We recently identified seven extremely low surface brightness galaxies in the vici…
A High Stellar Velocity Dispersion and ~100 Globular Clusters for the Ultra Diffuse Galaxy Dragonfly 44
Pieter van Dokkum, Roberto Abraham, Jean Brodie +6
Recently a population of large, very low surface brightness, spheroidal galaxies was identified in the Coma cluster. The apparent survival of these Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) in…
The Dragonfly Nearby Galaxies Survey. I. Substantial variation in the diffuse stellar halos around spiral galaxies
Allison Merritt, Pieter van Dokkum, Roberto Abraham +1
Galaxies are thought to grow through accretion; as less massive galaxies are disrupted and merge over time, their debris results in diffuse, clumpy stellar halos enveloping the cen…
