High-frequency water megamasers as precision probes of black holes, galaxies and cosmology: A case for a next-generation sub-mm/mm interferometer
Ingyin Zaw, C. M. Violette Impellizzeri, Dominic W. Pesce +8
Water megamasers in the circumnuclear disks of active galactic nuclei are among the most precise probes of supermassive black holes. VLBI imaging of 22 GHz disk masers has provided…
A model for the image structure and spectral energy distribution of relativistic jets
Dominic W. Pesce, Ramesh Narayan, Yuh Tsunetoe
Upcoming advances in high-frequency VLBI promise to enable spatially resolved studies of astrophysical jets across an increasingly large source population. We present here a Python…
Studying the Near-horizon Jet of M87 using Millimeter Balloon-borne VLBI stations
Felix M. Thiel, Dominic W. Pesce, Mayukh Bagchi +2
In this paper we present synthetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of M87 between a near-future configuration of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and one or…
The Balloon-borne VLBI Experiment (BVEX) Radio Telescope and Position Tracking System
Felix M. Thiel, Mayukh Bagchi, Laura M. Fissel +17
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is a technique in radio astronomy that vastly increases the diffraction limited angular resolution of radio observations by correlating sim…
An RFSoC-based Backend and Timing System for the Balloon-borne Very Long Baseline Interferometry Experiment
Mayukh Bagchi, Felix M. Thiel, Laura M. Fissel +13
We present the design and performance characterization of the digital backend and precision-timing system for the Balloon-borne Very Long Baseline Interferometry Experiment (BVEX),…
Resolving Nearby Supermassive Black Holes with the Black Hole Explorer
Yuto Akiyama, Kazunori Akiyama, Dominic W. Pesce +12
Recent Event Horizon Telescope results have demonstrated unique and transformative science in gravitational physics and black hole astrophysics enabled by event-horizon-scale imagi…
