Deep Learning with Darwin: Evolutionary Synthesis of Deep Neural Networks
Mohammad Javad Shafiee, Akshaya Mishra, Alexander Wong
Taking inspiration from biological evolution, we explore the idea of "Can deep neural networks evolve naturally over successive generations into highly efficient deep neural networ…
Random Feature Maps via a Layered Random Projection (LaRP) Framework for Object Classification
A. G. Chung, M. J. Shafiee, A. Wong
The approximation of nonlinear kernels via linear feature maps has recently gained interest due to their applications in reducing the training and testing time of kernel-based lear…
NeRD: a Neural Response Divergence Approach to Visual Salience Detection
M. J. Shafiee, P. Siva, C. Scharfenberger +2
In this paper, a novel approach to visual salience detection via Neural Response Divergence (NeRD) is proposed, where synaptic portions of deep neural networks, previously trained…
Scene Invariant Crowd Segmentation and Counting Using Scale-Normalized Histogram of Moving Gradients (HoMG)
Parthipan Siva, Mohammad Javad Shafiee, Mike Jamieson +1
The problem of automated crowd segmentation and counting has garnered significant interest in the field of video surveillance. This paper proposes a novel scene invariant crowd seg…
