The Robotic Multi-Object Focal Plane System of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI)
Joseph Harry Silber, Parker Fagrelius, Kevin Fanning +97
A system of 5,020 robotic fiber positioners was installed in 2019 on the Mayall Telescope, at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The robots automatically re-target their optical fiber…
An 8-mm diameter Fiber Robot Positioner for Massive Spectroscopy Surveys
N. Fahim, F. Prada, J. P. Kneib +22
Massive spectroscopic survey are becoming trendy in astrophysics and cosmology, as they can address new fundamental knowledge such as Galactic Archaeology and probe the nature of t…
Collision-free motion planning for fiber positioner robots: discretization of velocity profiles
Laleh Makarem, Jean-Paul Kneib, Denis Gillet +6
The next generation of large-scale spectroscopic survey experiments such as DESI, will use thousands of fiber positioner robots packed on a focal plate. In order to maximize the ob…
Developing Micro DC-Brushless Motor Driver and Position Control for Fiber Positioners
Laurent Jenni, Philipp Hörler, Laleh Makarem +7
In the large-scale, Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), thousands of fiber positioners will be used. Those are robotic positioners, with two axis, and having the size of a…
