New observations in transient hydrodynamic perturbations. Frequency jumps, intermediate term and spot formation
Stefania Scarsoglio, Francesca De Santi, Daniela Tordella
Sheared incompressible flows are usually considered non-dispersive media. As a consequence, the frequency evolution in transients has received much less attention than the wave ene…
Decaying turbulence: what happens when the correlation length varies spatially in two adjacent zones
Daniela Tordella, Michele Iovieno
We have imagined a numerical experiment to explore the onset of turbulent intermittency associated with a spatial perturbation of the correlation length. We place two isotropic reg…
Kolmogorov scaling bridges linear hydrodynamic stability and turbulence
Stefania Scarsoglio, Francesca De Santi, Daniela Tordella
The way in which kinetic energy is distributed over the multiplicity of inertial (intermediate) scales is a fundamental feature of turbulence. According to Kolmogorov's 1941 theory…
Small scale anisotropy in turbulent shearless mixing
Daniela Tordella, Michele Iovieno
The generation of small-scale anisotropy in turbulent shearless mixing is numerically investigated. Data from direct numerical simulations at Taylor Reynolds' numbers between 45 an…
