Instabilities, breathers and rogue waves in optics
John M. Dudley, Frédéric Dias, Miro Erkintalo +1
Optical rogue waves are rare yet extreme fluctuations in the value of an optical field. The terminology was first used in the context of an analogy between pulse propagation in opt…
Nonlinear optics of fibre event horizons
Karen E. Webb, Miro Erkintalo, Yiqing Xu +4
The nonlinear interaction of light in an optical fibre can mimic the physics at an event horizon. This analogue arises when a weak probe wave is unable to pass through an intense s…
Far detuned mid-infrared frequency conversion via normal dispersion modulation instability in chalcogenide microwire
Thomas Godin, Yves Combes, Raja Ahmad +3
We report the observation of modulation instability in the mid-infrared spectral region by pumping a hybrid polymer-chalcogenide optical microwire with a femtosecond optical parame…
Optical Rogue Waves in Whispering-Gallery-Mode Resonators
Aurélien Coillet, John Dudley, Goery Genty +2
We report a theoretical study showing that rogue waves can emerge in whispering gallery mode resonators as the result of the chaotic interplay between Kerr nonlinearity and anomalo…
