Entity -- Hardware-agnostic Particle-in-Cell Code for Plasma Astrophysics. III: Higher-order shape functions & generalized field stencils
Ludwig M. Böss, Arno Vanthieghem, Hayk Hakobyan +2
Modern particle-in-cell (PIC) codes have become an integral tool in plasma astrophysics. As most plasma phenomena grow from initially small instabilities, it is important to ensure…
Leaking Outside the Box: Kinetic Turbulence with Cosmic-Ray Escape
Evgeny A. Gorbunov, Daniel Grošelj, Fabio Bacchini
We study particle acceleration in strongly turbulent pair plasmas using novel 3D Particle-in-Cell simulations, featuring particle injection from an external heat bath and diffusive…
First-principles measurement of ion and electron energization in collisionless accretion flow
Evgeny A. Gorbunov, Fabio Bacchini, Vladimir Zhdankin +3
We present the largest 3D Particle-in-Cell shearing-box simulations of turbulence driven by the magnetorotational instability, for the first time employing the realistic proton-to-…
Collisionless Magnetorotational Turbulence in Pair Plasmas: Steady-state Dynamics, Particle Acceleration, and Radiative Cooling
Fabio Bacchini, Vladimir Zhdankin, Evgeny A. Gorbunov +4
We present 3D fully kinetic shearing-box simulations of pair-plasma magnetorotational turbulence with unprecedented macro-to-microscopic scale separation. While retrieving the expe…
