Intermediate-range Casimir-Polder interaction probed by high-order slow atom diffraction
C Garcion, N Fabre, H Bricha +4
At nanometer separation, the dominant interaction between an atom and a material surface is the fluctuation-induced Casimir-Polder potential. We demonstrate that slow atoms crossin…
Anisotropic Atom-Surface Interactions in the Casimir-Polder Regime
T. Taillandier-Loize, J. Baudon, G. Dutier +3
The distance-dependence of the anisotropic atom-wall interaction is studied. The central result is the 1/z^6 quadrupolar anisotropy decay in the retarded Casimir-Polder regime. Ana…
Efficient magneto-optical trapping of a metastable helium gas
F. Pereira Dos Santos, F. Perales, J. Leonard +6
This article presents a new experiment aiming at BEC of metastable helium atoms. It describes the design of a high flux discharge source of atoms and a robust laser system using a…
Penning collisions of laser-cooled metastable helium atoms
F. Pereira Dos Santos, F. Perales, J. Leonard +6
We present experimental results on the two-body loss rates in a magneto-optical trap of metastable helium atoms. Absolute rates are measured in a systematic way for several laser d…
