A rotating white dwarf shows different compositions on its opposite faces
Ilaria Caiazzo, Kevin B. Burdge, Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay +35
White dwarfs, the extremely dense remnants left behind by most stars after their death, are characterised by a mass comparable to that of the Sun compressed into the size of an Ear…
AREPO White Dwarf merger simulations resulting in edge-lit detonation and run-away hypervelocity companion
Uri Pierre Burmester, Lilia Ferrario, Rüdiger Pakmor +3
We present a series of high-resolution simulations generated with the moving-mesh code AREPO to model the merger of a carbon-oxygen primary white dwarf wi…
The non-explosive stellar merging origin of the ultra-massive carbon-rich white dwarfs
Adela Kawka, Lilia Ferrario, Stephane Vennes
We have investigated the origin of a sub-class of carbon-polluted white dwarfs (DQ) originally identified as the ``hot DQ" white dwarfs. These objects are relatively hot (10 000 <…
Why stars inflate to and deflate from red giant dimensions, II: replies to critics
Alvio Renzini
In a 1992 paper of ours the role of opacity-driven thermal instabilities in shaping the course of stellar evolution was amply illustrated. This included the classical issue of ``{\…
