Dirichlet walls and the end of time
Hanako Helton, Gary T. Horowitz, Donald Marolf
We study evolution in Einstein-Hilbert gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions imposed on a finite surface. We argue that there are open sets of initial data where such evolutio…
Axions Create Singularities on Extremal Horizons
Gary T. Horowitz, Maciej Kolanowski, Grant N. Remmen +1
We show that axions cause extremal black holes to have singular horizons. This is true for almost all values of the axion mass and coupling provided the black hole is rotating and…
Frozen Firewall: Generic Singularity Formation on an Extremal Horizon
Gary T. Horowitz, Maciej Kolanowski, Jorge E. Santos
It is known that linearized perturbations of extremal black holes result in growing curvature on the horizon. However, nonlinear perturbations typically do not evolve to extremal b…
Constraints are not enough
Gary T. Horowitz, Donald Marolf, Jorge E. Santos
The Euclidean Einstein-Hilbert action is well-known to be unbounded below and thus to raise many questions regarding the definition of the gravitational path integral. A variety of…
Counting States of Black Strings with Traveling Waves II
Gary T. Horowitz, Donald Marolf
We extend our recent analysis of the entropy of extremal black strings with traveling waves. We previously considered waves carrying linear momentum on black strings in six dimensi…
