Multi-stability of Atlantic and Pacific overturning: The role of Freshwater Forcing Asymmetries and the Hydrological Cycle
Elian Vanderborght, Oliver Mehling, Henk A. Dijkstra
A defining feature of the present-day global overturning circulation (GOC) is the absence of deep water formation in the Pacific, in contrast to the Atlantic. This asymmetry, assoc…
A Reduced-Dimensional Model for the Interhemispheric Geostrophic Meridional Overturning Circulation
Elian Vanderborght, Henk A. Dijkstra
The Global Overturning Circulation (GOC) is a key component of the climate system, transporting heat, carbon, and salt throughout the global ocean. Previous reduced-dimensional mod…
Feedback Processes causing an AMOC Collapse in the Community Earth System Model
Elian Vanderborght, René M. van Westen, Henk A. Dijkstra
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is recognized as a tipping element within the global climate system. Central to its tipping behavior is the salt-advection fe…
Substantial Risk of 21st Century AMOC Tipping even under Moderate Climate Change
René M. van Westen, Elian Y. P. Vanderborght, Michael Kliphuis +1
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a key component of the climate system and considered to be a tipping element. There is still a large uncertainty on the cr…
