VERITAS 2008 - 2009 monitoring of the variable gamma-ray source M87
The VERITAS Collaboration, V. A. Acciari, E. Aliu +84
M87 is a nearby radio galaxy that is detected at energies ranging from radio to VHE gamma-rays. Its proximity and its jet, misaligned from our line-of-sight, enable detailed morpho…
Discovery of very high energy gamma rays from PKS 1424+240 and multiwavelength constraints on its redshift
The VERITAS Collaboration, V. A. Acciari, The Fermi Collaboration +4
We report the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission above 140 GeV from PKS 1424+240, a BL Lac object with an unknown redshift. The photon spectrum above 140…
A connection between star formation activity and cosmic rays in the starburst galaxy M 82
V. A. Acciari, E. Aliu, T. Arlen +89
Although Galactic cosmic rays (protons and nuclei) are widely believed to be dominantly accelerated by the winds and supernovae of massive stars, definitive evidence of this origin…
The June 2008 flare of Markarian 421 from optical to TeV energies
R. M. Wagner, I. Donnarumma, J. Grube +6
We present optical to very-high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations of Mrk 421 between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high-energy (HE) gamma-ray signal was detected by AGILE-GRID durin…
