Rotational 3D printing of active-passive filaments and lattices with programmable shape morphing
Mustafa K. Abdelrahman, Jackson K. Wilt, Yeonsu Jung +6
Natural filaments, such as proteins, plant tendrils, octopus tentacles, and elephant trunks, can transform into arbitrary three-dimensional shapes that carry out vital functions. T…
Collective action and entanglement of magnetically active liquid crystal elastomer ribbons
Asaf Dana, Christian Benson, Manivannan Sivaperuman Kalairaj +10
Interactions between active individuals in animal collectives lead to emergent responses that remain elusive in synthetic soft matter. Here, shape-morphing polymers are used to cre…
Metric mechanics with non-trivial topology: actuating irises, cylinders and evertors
D. Duffy, M. Javed, M. K. Abdelrahman +3
Liquid crystal elastomers contract along their director on heating and recover on cooling, offering great potential as actuators and artificial muscles. If a flat sheet is programm…
Shape programming lines of concentrated Gaussian curvature
D. Duffy, L. Cmok, J. S. Biggins +7
Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) can undergo large reversible contractions along their nematic director upon heating or illumination. A spatially patterned director within a flat L…
