Using Genetic Data to Build Intuition about Population History
Alan R. Rogers
Genetic data are now routinely used to study the history of population size, subdivision, and gene flow. A variety of formal statistical methods is available for testing hypotheses…
Expectation of the Site Frequency Spectrum
Alan R. Rogers, Stephen P. Wooding
The site frequency spectrum describes variation among a set of n DNA sequences. Its i'th entry (i=1,2,...,n-1) is the number of nucleotide sites at which the mutant allele is prese…
Rate of Adaptive Evolution under Blending Inheritance
Alan R. Rogers
In a population of size N, adaptive evolution is 2N times faster under Mendelian inheritance than the rate implied by Victorian theories of heredity and evolution.
Bias in Estimators of Archaic Admixture
Alan R. Rogers, Ryan J. Bohlender
This article evaluates bias in one class of methods used to estimate archaic admixture in modern humans. These methods study the pattern of allele sharing among modern and archaic…
How Population Growth Affects Linkage Disequilibrium
Alan R. Rogers
Linkage disequilibrium (LD) is often summarized using the "LD curve," which relates the LD between pairs of sites to the distance that separates them along the chromosome. This pap…
