Stochastic Longshore Current Dynamics
Juan M. Restrepo, Shankar C. Venkataramani
We develop a stochastic parametrization, based on a `simple' deterministic model for the dynamics of steady longshore currents, that produces ensembles that are statistically consi…
Displacement Data Assimilation
W. Steven Rosenthal, Shankar C. Venkataramani, Arthur J. Mariano +1
We show that modifying a Bayesian data assimilation scheme by incorporating kinematically-consistent displacement corrections produces a scheme that is demonstrably better at estim…
Defining a Trend for a Time Series Which Makes Use of the Intrinsic Time-Scale Decomposition
Juan M. Restrepo, Shankar C. Venkataramani, Darin Comeau +1
We propose criteria that define a trend for time series with inherent multi-scale features. We call this trend the {\it tendency} of a time series. The tendency is defined empirica…
Using Data to Tune Nearshore Dynamics Models: A Bayesian Approach with Parametric Likelihood
Nusret Balci, Juan M. Restrepo, Shankar C. Venkataramani
We propose a modification of a maximum likelihood procedure for tuning parameter values in models, based upon the comparison of their output to field data. Our methodology, which u…
