Research Opportunities in Plasma Astrophysics
Stuart Bale, Amitava Bhattacharjee, Fausto Cattaneo +13
Major scientific questions and research opportunities are described on 10 unprioritized plasma astrophysics topics: (1) magnetic reconnection, (2) collisionless shocks and particle…
Spontaneous dust pulse formation in the afterglow of complex plasmas under microgravity conditions
Manis Chaudhuri, Lénaïc Couëdel, Edward Thomas +4
A new type of nonlinear dust pulse structures has been observed in afterglow complex plasma under microgravity condition on board the International Space Station (ISS). The dust pu…
Melting transition of two-dimensional complex plasma crystal in the DC glow discharge
S. Jaiswal, Ed Thomas
The formation of self-consistent dust crystal and its melting is a well known phenomenon in rf generated plasma but remains challenging in DC glow discharge plasma. Here, we report…
Microparticle cloud imaging and tracking for data-driven plasma science
Zhehui Wang, Jiayi Xu, Yao E. Kovach +5
Large data sets give rise to the `fourth paradigm' of scientific discovery and technology development, extending other approaches based on human intuition, fundamental laws of phys…
