Emergent dynamical phases and collective motion in termites
Leticia R. Paiva, Sidiney G. Alves, Og DeSouza +1
Termites which are able to forage in the open can be often seen, in the field or in the lab: (i) wandering around, forming no observable pattern, or (ii) clustering themselves in a…
Visibility graphs of animal foraging trajectories
Leticia R. Paiva, Sidiney G. Alves, Lucas Lacasa +2
The study of self-propelled particles is a fast-growing research topic where biologically inspired movement is increasingly becoming of much interest. A relevant example is the col…
Fruitful symbioses between termites and computers
Og DeSouza, Elio Tuci, Octavio Miramontes
The living-together of distinct organisms in a single termite nest along with the termite builder colony, is emblematic in its ecological and evolutionary significance. On top of p…
Lévy flights and self-similar exploratory behaviour of termite workers: beyond model fitting
Octavio Miramontes, Og DeSouza, Leticia Ribeiro Paiva +2
Animal movements have been related to optimal foraging strategies where self-similar trajectories are central. Most of the experimental studies done so far have focused mainly on f…
Social Evolution: New Horizons
Octavio Miramontes, Og DeSouza
Cooperation is a widespread natural phenomenon yet current evolutionary thinking is dominated by the paradigm of selfish competition. Recent advanced in many fronts of Biology and…
Non-Lévy mobility patterns of Mexican Me'Phaa peasants searching for fuelwood
Octavio Miramontes, Og DeSouza, Diego Hernández +1
We measured mobility patterns that describe walking trajectories of individual Me'Phaa peasants searching and collecting fuelwood in the forests of "La Montaña de Guerrero" in Mexi…
