Collisional Thermalization of Hydrogen and Helium in Solar Wind Plasma
Bennett A. Maruca, Stuart D. Bale, Luca Sorriso-Valvo +2
In situ observations of the solar wind frequently show the temperature of -particles (fully ionized helium), , to significantly differ from that of protons (ionized hydroge…
A Parallel-Propagating Alfvénic Ion-Beam Instability in the High-Beta Solar Wind
Daniel Verscharen, Sofiane Bourouaine, Benjamin D. G. Chandran +1
We investigate the conditions under which parallel-propagating Alfvén/ion-cyclotron waves are driven unstable by an isotropic () population of alpha p…
Self-Consistent Ion Cyclotron Anisotropy-Beta Relation for Solar Wind Protons
Philip A. Isenberg, Bennett A. Maruca, Justin C. Kasper
We derive a set of self-consistent marginally stable states for a system of ion-cyclotron waves propagating parallel to the large-scale magnetic field through a homogeneous proton-…
Residual Energy Spectrum of Solar Wind Turbulence
C. H. K. Chen, S. D. Bale, C. S. Salem +1
It has long been known that the energy in velocity and magnetic field fluctuations in the solar wind is not in equipartition. In this paper, we present an analysis of 5 years of Wi…
