Abstract

Let be a measure space and a measurable transformation. For any measurable and , the possibly infinite return time is . If is an ergodic tranformation of the probability space , and , then a theorem of M. Kac states that . We generalize this to any invertible measure preserving transformation on a finite measure space , by proving independently, and nearly trivially that for any measurable one has , where is the smallest invariant set containing . In particular this also provides a simpler proof of Poincaré's recurrence theorem.
