arXiv:math/0210054

Abstract

Let be the moduli space of torsion free structures on a compact 7-manifold , and let be the structures with volume() . The cohomology map is known to be a local diffeomorphism. It is proved that every nonzero element of is a Morse function on when composed with . When dim , the result in particular implies is one to one on each connected component of . Considering the first Pontryagin class , we formulate a compactness conjecture on the set of structures of volume() with bounded norm of curvature, which would imply that every connected component of is contractible. We also observe the locus is a hyperbolic affine sphere if the volume of the torus is constant on .
