Measurement of the inclusive D*+- production in gamma-gamma collisions at LEP

Abstract

The inclusive production of D $^{*\pm}$ mesons in two-photon collisions is measured with the ALEPH detector at $\epem$ centre-of-mass energies from 183$\unit{GeV}$ to 209$\unit{GeV}$. A total of $360 \pm 27$ D $^{*\pm}$ meson events were observed from an integrated luminosity of 699\unit{pb^{-1}} $. C o n t r ib u t i o n s f r o m d i r ec t an d s in g l e - r eso l v e d r ocesses a r ese p a r a t e d u s in g t h er a t i oo f t h e t r an s v er se m o m e n t u m$ p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}} $o f t h eD$ ^{*\pm} $t o t h e v i s ib l e in v a r ian t ma ss$ W_{\mathrm{vis}} $o f t h ee v e n t . D i f f er e n t ia l cr osssec t i o n so f D$ ^{*\pm} $p r o d u c t i o na s f u n c t i o n so f$ p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}} $an d t h e p se u d or a p i d i t y$ |η^{\rm D^{*\pm}}| $a r e m e a s u r e d in t h er an g e$ 2\unit{GeV}/c < p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}} < 12\unit{GeV}/c $an d$ |η^{\rm D^{*\pm}}| < 1.5 $. T h ey a r eco m p a r e d t o n e x t - t o - l e a d in g or d er (N L O) p er t u r ba t i v e QC D c a l c u l a t i o n s . T h ee x t r a p o l a t i o n o f t h e in t e g r a t e d v i s ib l eD$ ^{*\pm} $cr osssec t i o n t o t h e t o t a l c ha r m cr osssec t i o n, ba se d o n t h e P y t hia M o n t e C a r l o p r o g r am, y i e l d s$ σ(\epem \to \epem \ccbar)_ {=197\unit{GeV}} = 731 \pm 74_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 47_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 157_{\mathrm{extr}} \unit{pb} $.
