Fundamental group of locally symmetric varieties

Abstract

Take a bounded symmetric domain $D$ and an arithmetic subgroup $\Gamma$ of $\mathrm{Aut}(D)$. Take the quotient $D/\Gamma$, compactify and resolve the singularities. We study the fundamental group of the compact complex manifolds that result from this procedure, and in particular the case of Siegel modular threefolds.
