Abstract

We study the maximum order of a connected -regular graph whose second largest eigenvalue is at most . For every real , we prove that \[ T(θ) =\limsup_{k\to\infty}\bigl(v(k,θ)-2k\bigr) =2\left\lfloor1+\frac{θ^2}{4}\right\rfloor. \] In particular, for every real , disproving the Yang-Koolen conjecture. We also determine for all sufficiently large on explicit intervals of . We prove a jump in the second largest eigenvalue above . For each fixed and all sufficiently large , every connected -regular graph of order at least whose second largest eigenvalue is at most is the crown graph. For , we prove that for every . Finally, we obtain two new upper bounds on .
