Modeling Broad-Frequency-Band Water-Wave Experiments with Generalizations of the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

Abstract
Waves generated by storms gradually disperse, forming swells that can travel thousands of kilometers across the ocean's surface. The evolution of deep-water swells, which are unaffected by the seafloor, can be modeled by the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and its generalizations. These models typically assume that the wave trains are comprised of a narrow band of frequencies. We present measurements from a new series of laboratory experiments in which the broadbandedness is increased and show that generalizations of the NLS equation can accurately model these measurements.
