Abstract

Let be the class of polynomials of degree at least with , , let and let be Smale's mean value constant. Smale proved that , observed that , and asked whether . We show that coincides with the supremum running over pairs in which is a normalised univalent map of the standard unit disk and is a finite Blaschke product with such that is locally univalent in . Smale's question is therefore a problem in univalent function theory. We also introduce the degree-restricted constants for with and show that This implies that and we also show that there are polynomials of arbitrarily large degree with . The polynomial construction behind these results also settles Problems 1A and 1B of Smale's 1981 paper. For and an integer let . Smale proved, by Löwner's coefficient estimate for inverses of univalent functions, that , where is the -th Catalan number and he asked whether the constant (Problem 1A), or the constant for (Problem 1B), can be reduced. We prove that for every . Hence the constants and cannot be reduced and the answers to both problems are negative.
