Abstract

For any prime number , the classic Hopkins-Mahowald theorem asserts that is an -Thom spectrum over the -complete sphere spectrum. Kitchloo extended this result to show that is an -Thom spectrum over the -local sphere spectrum, except for the case when . We solve the remaining case by showing that is not an -Thom spectrum over the -complete sphere spectrum, and consequently the -local sphere spectrum. This work was developed with substantial assistance from GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, and an early draft was subsequently reviewed using Claude Fable 5.1.
