Counterexamples to O'Neil's Period-Index Problem on Elliptic Curves

arXiv:2608.29288

Abstract

Let be an elliptic curve over a number field , and let be a homogeneous space under . Suppose that has period and index . O'Neil asked whether one can always choose a lift of to whose period-index obstruction has order exactly . We give a negative answer to this question by constructing an explicit family of examples.Taking , we prove that there exist infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic elliptic curves such that each admits infinitely many homogeneous spaces with period and index , but the period-index obstruction of every lift of to has order exactly .
