Abstract

Let be a group, a commutative ring and a strongly -graded -algebra with a given homogeneous presentation. We show that the identity component can be obtained by successively applying some of Bergman's universal ring constructions to the underlying ring . This yields a presentation of in terms of generators and relations, which depends on the given presentation of and the choice of ``frames'', which identify each with a direct summand of a free module of finite rank. We use this result to describe the -components of canonically -graded Leavitt algebras and Leavitt path algebras of finite hypergraphs without sinks and sources.

Substantially revised and extended: added a general theorem for strongly group-graded algebras and applications to hypergraph Leavitt path algebras; simplified the proof for Leavitt algebras
