Sequential Autoregressive Block Metropolis--Hastings for Two-Dimensional Lattice Fields

arXiv:2512.19575

Abstract

We construct a Metropolis-corrected sequential autoregressive block update for continuous lattice fields. A variational autoregressive network (VAN) regenerates the sites of an ordered geometric block, and the Hastings ratio uses forward generation and reverse restoration probabilities evaluated along their respective partial configurations. We apply the update to the two-dimensional theory at , , and , comparing learned single-site, finite-block, and global proposals. For each trained VAN, the autocorrelation of , measured per sweep, varies nonmonotonically with block size: intermediate blocks yield smaller point estimates of than the learned single-site update, while larger finite blocks have lower acceptance. When networks trained at are applied without retraining to a target at , finite-block acceptances change little, whereas the global-proposal acceptance decreases and its estimated increases, with the strongest degradation at .
