Abstract
A -group is called *ab-maximal* if for every proper subgroup of . Similarly, is called *-maximal* if for every proper subgroup of , where is the minimal number of generators of . If is ab-maximal then , while if is -maximal and then . Answering questions of González-Sánchez--Klopsch and Lisi--Sabatini, for all we construct infinitely many ab-maximal -groups of class with , and infinitely many -maximal -groups of class with . The construction is probabilistic and based on the degeneracy of random alternating bilinear maps on subspaces. It is notable however that in the ab-maximal case we do not have a high-probability result but rather in a suitable sense the proportion of class- groups with and that are ab-maximal is close to .
