Abstract
Let be a (compact) non-spin spin manifold. Fix a Riemannian metric on and a connection on , and let be the associated spin Dirac operator. Let be the twisted scalar curvature (which takes values in the endomorphisms of the spinor bundle), where is the scalar curvature of and comes from the curvature -form of the connection . Then the Lichnerowicz-Schrödinger formula for the square of the Dirac operator takes the form . In a previous work we proved that a closed non-spin simply-connected spin-manifold of dimension admits a pair such that if and only if the index vanishes in . In this paper we introduce a scalar-valued generalized scalar curvature , where is the pointwise operator norm of Clifford multiplication , acting on spinors. We show that the positivity condition on the operator is equivalent to the positivity of the scalar function . We prove a corresponding trichotomy theorem concerning the curvature , and study its implications. We also show that the space of pairs with has non-trivial topology, and address a conjecture about non-triviality of the ``index difference'' map.
