Abstract
We study projected gradient descent (ProjGD) for the rank-constrained problem when the unconstrained minimizer has rank . Our main contribution is a quantitative geometric certificate relating the normal component of to the smallest nonzero singular value of . Under a rank- restricted curvature condition with constants , every nonoptimal rank- stationary point satisfies , where is the tangent space to the rank- manifold at . This certificate implies that is the unique fixed point of ProjGD whenever the step size satisfies . With an additional rank- restricted smoothness assumption, we establish deterministic global linear convergence for . The result accommodates arbitrary rank overparameterization and is independent of the singular-value condition number of . As a consequence, we obtain an alternative proof of the sharp threshold for the absence of spurious local minima in the asymmetric setting, where . This threshold and matching asymmetric examples were established in recent work.
