Abstract

Let be a field, be a separable field extension of degree and be the Galois closure of . Let and with . Then is core-free in , i.e. . Let be the norm one torus of with . We fix as an abstract group and let range over all core-free subgroups of up to conjugacy. For each of the following groups , , , , , , , , , , by using GAP computations with the aid of PARI/GP, we determine, for any core-free subgroup up to conjugacy, whether is stably -rational, not stably but retract -rational, or not retract -rational. The resulting cases ( are Galois, are non-Galois) split into , , cases respectively. We also give alternative proofs for the known cases (i) , i.e. is Galois, and (ii) with . The stably -rational cases occur for , , . Except for the stably -rational case and , for with , we prove that is stably -rational if and only if is retract -rational if and only if , and conjecture that this holds for any . When is a global field and is retract -rational, e.g. , , , the Hasse norm principle holds for .
