Abstract

Let (resp. L(V)) be the semigroup of all transformations (resp. linear transformations) of a set (resp. vector space ). For a subset of and a subsemigroup of , consider the subsemigroup of , where agrees with on . We give a new characterization for to be a regular semigroup [inverse semigroup]. For a subspace of and a subsemigroup of , we define an analogous subsemigroup of . We describe regular elements in and determine when is a regular semigroup [inverse semigroup, completely regular semigroup]. If (resp. ) contains the identity of (resp. ), we describe unit-regular elements in (resp. ) and determine when (resp. ) is a unit-regular semigroup.
