Abstract
Given a finite point set in , and we say that is a weak -net if it pierces every convex set with . We show that for any finite point set in dimension , and any , one can construct a weak -net whose cardinality is in dimension , and in all dimensions . To be precise, our weak -net has cardinality for any , with This is the first significant improvement of the bound of that was obtained in 1993 by Chazelle, Edelsbrunner, Grigni, Guibas, Sharir, and Welzl for general point sets in dimension .
Preliminary version accepted to STOC 2021. The exponent is corrected in dimension 3, and slightly improved in all dimensions . Submitted to a journal
