Set-theoretic solutions of the Pentagon Equation

Abstract

A set-theoretic solution of the Pentagon Equation on a non-empty set is a map such that , where , and are mappings from to itself and is the flip map, i.e., . We give a description of all involutive solutions, i.e., . It is shown that such solutions are determined by a factorization of as direct product and a map , where is a non-empty set and are elementary abelian -groups. Isomorphic solutions are determined by the cardinalities of , and , i.e., the map is irrelevant. In particular, if is finite of cardinality for some then, on , there are precisely non-isomorphic solutions of the Pentagon Equation.
