Distal higher rank lattice actions on surfaces

Abstract

Let $\Gamma$ be a lattice in $\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ with $n\ge 3$ and $\mathcal{S}$ be a closed surface. Then $\Gamma$ has no distal minimal action on $\mathcal{S}$.
