Dimensionality Reduction for Sum-of-Distances Metric

arXiv:1912.12003

Abstract

We give a dimensionality reduction procedure to approximate the sum of distances of a given set of points in to any "shape" that lies in a -dimensional subspace. Here, by "shape" we mean any set of points in . Our algorithm takes an input in the form of an matrix , where each row of denotes a data point, and outputs a subspace of dimension such that the projections of each of the points onto the subspace and the distances of each of the points to the subspace are sufficient to obtain an -approximation to the sum of distances to any arbitrary shape that lies in a -dimensional subspace of . These include important problems such as -median, -subspace approximation, and subspace clustering with . Dimensionality reduction reduces the data storage requirement to from nnz. Here nnz could potentially be as large as . Our algorithm runs in time nnzpoly, up to logarithmic factors. For dense matrices, where nnz, we give a faster algorithm, that runs in time poly up to logarithmic factors. Our dimensionality reduction algorithm can also be used to obtain poly size coresets for -median and -subspace approximation problems in polynomial time.
