Abstract

Let be a domain in $\Ri^d$ with boundary and let denote the Euclidean distance to . Further let $H=-\divv(C\nabla)$ where with are real, bounded, Lipschitz continuous functions and . Assume also that there is a such that as with where is a bounded Lipschitz continuous function with on a boundary layer . Finally we require $|(\divv C).(\nabla d_Γ)|d_Γ^{\,-δ+1}$ to be bounded on~. Then we prove that if is a -domain, or if $Ω=\Ri^d\backslash S$ where is a countable set of positively separated points, or if $Ω=\Ri^d\backslash \overline Π$ with a convex set whose boundary has Hausdorff dimension then the condition is sufficient for to be essentially self-adjoint as an operator on . In particular suffices for -domains. Finally we prove that is necessary in the -case.
