Abstract
We define the stabilizing number of a knot as the minimal number of connected summands required for to bound a nullhomotopic locally flat disc in . This quantity is defined when the Arf invariant of is zero. We show that is bounded below by signatures and Casson-Gordon invariants and bounded above by the topological -genus . We provide an infinite family of examples with .
