The distance to square-free polynomials

arXiv:1801.01240

Abstract

In this paper, we consider a variant of Turán's problem on the distance from an integer polynomial in to the nea\-rest irreducible polynomial in . We prove that for any polynomial , there exist infinitely many square-free polynomials such that , where denotes the sum of the absolute values of the coefficients of . On the other hand, we show that this inequality cannot be replaced by . For this, for each integer we construct infinitely many polynomials of degree such that neither itself nor any , where is a non-negative integer, is square-free. Polynomials over prime fields and their distances to square-free polynomials are also considered.
