Proton distribution radii of C illuminate features of neutron halos

arXiv:1608.08697 · doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.117.102501

Abstract

Proton radii of C densities derived from first accurate charge changing cross section measurements at 900 MeV with a carbon target are reported. A thick neutron surface evolves from 0.5 fm in C to 1 fm in C. The halo radius in C is found to be 6.40.7 fm as large as Li. Ab initio calculations based on chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces reproduce well the radii.
