Abstract
Let be a power of a prime, let be the finite field with elements and let . For a polynomial of degree and a subset , we define the sum-of-digits function to be the sum of all the coefficients of in with . In the case when , we prove, except for a few genuine exceptions, that for any and any there exists an irreducible polynomial of degree over such that . In particular, restricting ourselves to the case when , we obtain a new proof of the Hansen-Mullen irreducibility conjecture (now a theorem) in the case when . In the case of , we prove that, for any , any and any , there exists an irreducible polynomial of degree such that .
