Abstract
Motivated by a graph theoretic process intended to measure the speed of the spread of contagion in a graph, Bonato, Janssen, and Roshanbin [Burning a Graph as a Model of Social Contagion, Lecture Notes in Computer Science 8882 (2014) 13-22] define the burning number of a graph as the smallest integer for which there are vertices such that for every vertex of , there is some with , and for every . For a connected graph of order , they prove that , and conjecture . We show that and for every connected graph of order and every . For a tree of order with vertices of degree , and vertices of degree at least , we show and . Furthermore, we characterize the binary trees of depth that have burning number .
