Abstract

A search for the rare decays $B_{s}^{0} \to μ^{+} μ^{-}$ and $B^{0} \to μ^{+} μ^{-}$ is performed with the LHCb experiment using 1.1\,fb $^{- 1}$ of data collected at $s = 8$ \,TeV $an d 1.0 f b$ ^{-1} $o f d a t a co l l ec t e d a t$ \sqrt s=7 $T e V . A n e x cesso f$ B^0_s\rightarrow μ^+μ^- $c an d i d a t es w i t h r es p ec tt o t h e ba c k g r o u n d e x p ec t a t i o n s i so b ser v e d w i t ha s t a t i s t i c a l s i g ni f i c an ceo f 3.5 s t an d a r dd e v ia t i o n s . A b r an c hin g f r a c t i o n o f$ {\cal BR}(B^0_s\rightarrow μ^+μ^-) =(3.2^{+1.5}_{-1.2}) \times 10^{-9} $i s m e a s u r e d w i t han u nbinn e d ma x im u m l ik e l ih oo df i t .
