Discovery of Five New R Coronae Borealis Stars in the MACHO Galactic Bulge Database
A. Zaniewski, Geoffrey C. Clayton, D. L. Welch +3
We have identified five new R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Galactic bulge using the MACHO Project photometry database, raising the total number of known Galactic RCB stars t…
A Unique Dust Formation Episode in the SC-Type Star UY Cen
Justin D. R. Steinfadt, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Tom Lloyd Evans +1
We report the first detection of new dust formation in an SC star. The prototype of the SC stars, UY Cen, underwent a decline of 2 magnitudes in the V-band. The SC stars show pulsa…
Detection of Near-IR CO Absorption Bands in R Coronae Borealis Stars
Emily D. Tenenbaum, Geoffrey C. Clayton, Martin Asplund +8
R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars are hydrogen-deficient, carbon-rich pulsating post-AGB stars that experience massive irregular declines in brightness caused by circumstellar dust fo…
An Extremely Large Excess of 18O in the Hydrogen-Deficient Carbon Star, HD 137613
Geoffrey C. Clayton, Falk Herwig, T. R. Geballe +4
We report the discovery of a uniquely large excess of 18O in the hydrogen-deficient carbon (HdC) star, HD 137613, based on a spectrum of the first overtone bands of CO at 2.3-2.4 m…
